Virginia Cancer Specialists' Physicians

Dr. Ivan Aksentijevich earned his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Belgrade, Serbia. After immigrating to the United States, he completed two post-doctoral research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in Bethesda, Maryland.  During his first fellowship, Dr. Aksentijevich worked to isolate hematopoietic stem cells and induce donor specific host immune tolerance.  Subsequently, he worked on developing methods to reverse cancer genes that confer cancer cells’ resistance.  In recognition for his research achievements at NIH, Dr. Aksentijevich was awarded the National Institute of Health Biotechnology Award and the National Cancer Institute Technology Transfer Award.

Following his post-doctoral fellowships, Dr. Aksentijevich enrolled in a 3-year internal medicine residency program at St Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, during which he earned two Regional American College of Physicians Clinical Awards.  Dr. Aksentijevich went on to complete a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.  As part of his clinical fellowship training, he worked on developing clinical trials for patients with various hematologic malignancies.  In recognition for his work on stem cell transplantation in patients with refractory non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Dr.  Aksentijevich was awarded the American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award.

Dr. Aksentijevich has published over 30 scientific articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Blood, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Transplantation Immunology, and Cancer.  He has also authored several chapters on subjects ranging from leukemias to transplantation immunology and has been an invited guest speaker at leading national and international scientific meetings.

Dr. Aksentijevich has committed himself to providing the highest levels of patient care in his practice of clinical oncology.  He treats patients afflicted with various malignancies, with a special focus on hematologic malignancies.  He is board-certified by the American Board of Medical Oncology and the American Board of Hematology.  He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Hematology and has been consistently named as a Top Doctor in publications such as Northern Virginia magazine and Washingtonian magazine.

Outside of his practice, Dr. Aksentijevich enjoys travel, tennis, and spending time with his wife and his five daughters.
